    Persagen Owner, Victoria A. Stuart

    Hello, this is Victoria A. Stuart, the Founder / Owner of Persagen Consulting. With a lifelong interest in all facets of math, science and technology, it was perhaps inevitable that I would be drawn to a career as a research scientist. I hold a B.Sc. in Biochemistry from Dalhousie University, a M.Sc. in Occupational Hygiene (now the School of Environmental Health) from the University of British Columbia, and a Ph.D. in Biology (specializing in Molecular Genetics) from the University of Victoria. During that period, spanning more than 30 years, I spent extended periods of time training and working in five different laboratories at four different institutions - the three universities just mentioned, plus a U.S. federal research institution, the Laboratory of Molecular Genetics at the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS) My scientific career and professional career, including my scientific and other skills, are summarized in my curriculum vitae. A partial listing of this experience / expertise includes:
    • Molecular genetics: All basic laboratory techniques (cloning; chromatography; confocal microscopy; DNA hybridization; DNA sequencing; electrophoresis; PCR; etc.);

    • Bacterial and yeast strain construction, using (for the bacterium Escherichia coli) site-directed mutagenesis, transducing bacteriophage P1vir), bacterial conjugation / interrupted matings, and (for the yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae), chemical (e.g. MMS: methylmethane sulphonate) and UV-induced mutagenesis; sporulation and tetrad dissection; site-directed mutagenesis (the "delitto perfetto" method); etc.

    • Mutational assays: bacteria (lacI assay; others); yeast (including the mtArg8 mitochondrial mutagenesis assay); transgenic mice / rats (to investigate spontaneous mutations occurring during ageing, and mutations induced by dietary and environmental mutagens / carcinogens); the comet assay (DNA damage in single human cells);

    • Polynucleotide chemistry

    • Cancer biology

    • DNA repair

    • Bacterial, yeast and mitochondrial genetics

    • Epidemiology / Molecular epidemiology

    • Environmental health / Toxicology / Occupational Health and Safety (Industrial / Occupational Hygiene)

    • Bioinformatics: Analyses of yeast, Rhesus monkey and human genomes using Cytoscape and custom "interactomes," GeneSpring, GenMAPP, etc.

    • Grant preparation; manuscript preparation;

    • Conference participation (posters; talks);

    • Scientific leadership: Presidency of the Genetics and Environmental Mutagenesis Society (GEMS), including organizing and hosting scientific conferences;

    • Peer-review (manuscripts; research proposals); and

    • Literature review.

    Sincerely,

    Victoria Stuart
